Podcast Episode 3: WWJD?

This week, I discuss the impact that declining law school enrollment has had on Catholic University's budget.  (Spoiler alert: they're going to continue feeding at the law school loan trough, but some art courses and such are on the chopping block).  Also, part 2 of my interview with Howard, a former law school classmate who is now working in a non-legal position.  Howard and I discuss his first lawyer gig, and why he got out.  And finally, click here to continue reading and go to the podcast

  1. The health problems that were discussed on your podcast from the stress associated with practicing law, especially for young attorneys, is very real. I know of one young attorney who passed out prior to representing a client in an IRS hearing. I know a second young attorney in his first deposition who excused himself, went into the bathroom, passed out, hit his head and came back all bloody. Hives are very real from stress as well since I suffered from them about a year. There is no time to exercise or relax or take real vacations. My first job was a job from hell where I swear the attorney I worked for was bi-polar. After a year, I received one week vacation. At the end of the week, I realized how miserable I was and could not return to the pressure cooker and quit. I was lucky because my student loans were under control. I feel sorry for people so deeply in debt who may not have that option.

  4. Well I can tell you this. I have a Mexican friend named Jesus. He's a lawyer out in Vancouver, BC. Surprisingly, he would do the opposite of the actual Jesus, just because of his name.

  8. A lawyer, according to Black's Law Dictionary, is "a person learned in the law; as an attorney, counsel or solicitor; a person who is practicing law." Law is the system of rules of conduct established by the sovereign government of a society to correct wrongs, maintain the stability of political and social authority, and deliver justice.A Blossom Street Novel ® A Lawyer Presents the Evidence for the Afterlife ® The Lawyer Bubble : A Profession in Crisis ® Quicken Home and Business 2013 ® Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer ® Lawyers Desk Book, 2013 Edition ® How to Make Money Buying Distressed Real Estate ® How to Probate an Estate in California ® The Executor's Guide: Settling a Loved One's Estate or Trust ® Estate and Trust Administration For Dummies [Paperback] ® The village lawyer: a farce, in two acts ® The Young Lawyer's Jungle book Working as a lawyer involves the practical application of abstract legal theories and knowledge to solve specific individualized problems, or to advance the interests of those who retain (i.e., hire) lawyers to perform legal services.

  9. This is awesome. I am so glad to see someone who can keep such an optimistic an positive outlook with the complications that can happen in life. I know a lawyer in Nanaimo that is the same way. I don't know what it is about me that makes me get down on myself so much.

    1. Thanks for reading! My blog is now legallyobligated.com. I haven't filtered out the spam comments on here in a while. I try to keep up with it, but it's a big job! I agree, the attorney advertisements are hilarious. I was never able to figure out how to get the right ads on here. You can't filter out the legal industry, which is understandable. Desperate attorneys are probably the majority of google's advertising base.

  12. Ignoring all the crappy spam above, do you plan on making another podcast soon or posting a new blog post? I really enjoy your writing and perspective and hope that you continue producing new stuff for this blog. Hope your career and personal life are going well! Also, screw the law schools. The drumbeat of criticism needs to continue. The truth about law schools is finally gradually reaching the American public.

  13. One thing that I've been looking into doing is going to school to become an attorney. I still have a long time before I have to decide on anything, but I figured it would be smart to get an idea of what directions I should go. This gave me some insights on some of the consequences of going to law school and stuff, but the rewards sound like it would be worth it.
